Engagement Tab Missing in Excel or Word

Issue

The Engagement ribbon tab is missing when opening an Excel or Word file from Engagement. Or, a workpaper from Engagement is acting in unexpected ways.

Cause

A non-responsive instance of Excel/Word may cause the plugin to break.

Possible Resolutions

Save before beginning
Test after each section

  1. Close any unresponsive instances of the affected program
    1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to open Task Manager.
    2. Close all EXCEL.EXE or WINWORD.EXE processes.
      1. Look in the Details tab if you see none in the Processes tab
    3. Right-click the Excel or Word processes then click End Task.

 

  1. Check if the ribbon plugin is active.
    1. Open the affected program
    2. Click File > Options > Add-ins
      1. In the Manage box, select Disabled Items
        1. Click Go
    3. Enable any add-ins from the list below
      1.  Skip if nothing is disabled
    4. In the Manage box, select the add-in type
      1. Excel Add-ins:
        1. Epace.xla        (EXCEL ONLY)
      2. Templates:
        1. Epace.dot       (WORD ONLY)
      3. COM Add-ins:
        1. Pfx.Ribbon.WordAddin       (WORD ONLY)
        2. Pfx.Ribbon.ExcelAddin        (EXCEL ONLY)
    5. Click Go
    6. Click OK and close program

 

  1. Contact a member of the IT team for help with these next steps
     
  2. Uninstall and Reinstall Ribbons
    1. Uninstall
      1. Open Control Panel in Windows
      2. Select Programs and Features
      3. Or Uninstall a Program
      4. Right click and uninstall
        1. Pfx.Ribbon.Exceladdin
        2. Pfx.Ribbon.Wordaddin
    2. Install
      1. Navigate to C:\Pfx Engagement\WM
      2. Double-click on each file below
        1. Pfx.Ribbon.Exceladdin.vsto
        2. Pfx.Ribbon.Wordaddin.vsto

 

  1. If the ribbon will not stay enabled, repair all Visual Studio Tools for Office Runtime installs on the machine. These installs may include the following:
    1. Microsoft® Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office 2005
    2. Microsoft® Visual Studio Tools for the Office system 3.0 Runtime
    3. Microsoft® Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime

 

  1. If the ribbon is still not showing, a repair of Office then Engagement must be done
      1. These must be done in order, otherwise engagement will not function properly
    1. Repair Office
      1. Open Control Panel in Windows
      2. Select Programs and Features
      3. Or Uninstall a Program
      4. Right click and Change on Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus
      5. Select Online Repair
        1. You will need an internet connection for this
      6. Once the repair is finished click Close
    2. Repair Engagement
    3. From the Uninstall a program window, find CCH PFX Engagement, and choose to repair
